A Review of R&D-Based Growth Models

上期回顧
We reviewed the features and limitations of the first-generation endogenous growth models.We went through an expanding variety model in which the final good is produced with labor and a continuum of differentiated intermediate goods(machines).The R&D is done with the final good;successful innovations create new machine varieties,which bring profit flows due to the monopolistic competitive market structure.We compared the BGP growth rates in the decentralized equilibrium and the social planner's solution;the former is lower due to insufficient R&D input.
本期預告
We will study two alternative expanding variety models.The first features technological spillover and uses labor as R&D input.In the second model,the variety is defined over consumption goods rather than intermediate inputs.
