講座論文題目：Activism from the Inside Out: Evidence from Mandatory Workforce Policy Adoptions around the World
We investigate how firms balance between labor costs and employees’ social preferences. Exploiting a comprehensive data of freight shipment records, we show that U.S. firms increase import from the supplier country adopting mandatory workforce policy (MWP) that increases labor welfare more than the counterpart firm-country pairs. This effect is driven by the democratic state-headquartered firms, especially those with intensive human capital and activism for employee welfare, suggesting that employees’ loyalty to the global community of working class plays a vital role in corporate social responsibility. Faced with the inside activism, the marginal benefit of catering employees’ political interests outweigh the marginal cost of import. Consistent with this notion, we show that the MWP-affected importers have increased ratings on employee welfare along with cost increases that are economically negligible. Overall, this study sheds light on the formation of the worldwide social preferences for labor welfare.
