Platform Shelter and Persuasion

In the digital era, platforms have emerged as a new industrial structure. By establishing pricing structures, they have created market order, attracting both consumers and producers, and guiding transactions in an orderly manner. However, as a foundational infrastructure of the digital age, platform markets, while enjoying monopoly profits, have also experienced new types of market failures. Due to the cross-network externalities created by platform markets, platforms are incentivized to allow low-quality producers to join, while concealing such information from consumers. By attracting more consumers, platforms exploit bilateral network externalities to extract excess profits. However, these low-quality producers harm consumer welfare and overall social welfare, leading to a partial failure in the platform market's self-regulation and internal oversight.
