The Externalities of Political Connections: Evidence from CEO Compensation

摘要

This paper investigates the monetary value of CEOs’ work experience in politically connected firms. Our findings indicate that firms reward CEOs for their prior tenure in these politically linked firms. This pay premium cannot be attributed to superior managerial performance or enhanced power among these experienced CEOs. Further analysis demonstrates the rationality of the pay premium by documenting a significant sensitivity of CEOs’ compensation to firm-level political risk and by showing that experienced CEOs enhance firms’ capability of political risk management. These findings reveal the spillover effect of politically connected firms, particularly through the transfer of advanced political risk management experience to other organizations via talent flows.

何潇潇，CFA、西南财經大學金融學院副教授、博士生導師、金融學科博士生項目專項負責人。畢業于香港城市大學商學院經濟金融系，獲得金融學博士學位。主要研究領域為公司治理、企業創新、資本市場、供應鍊金融。代表性學術成果發表在《财貿經濟》、《Journal of Corporate Finance》等國内外權威期刊上。主持四川省社科規劃項目、中央高校基本科研項目，參與國家自然科學基金項目、教育部人文社會科學重點研究基地重大項目、教育部人文社會科學研究基金項目等。多份政策咨詢報告獲國務院辦公廳、教育部辦公廳、四川省委辦公廳采納。
