The competitive shock to manufacturing sector emanating from China’s economic ascent could in theory either augment or stifle US innovation. Using three decades of US patents matched to corporate owners, the authors quantify how foreign competition affects domestic innovation. In the body of the paper, they defined a series of functions and regression equations to measure trade exposure, seek for evidence of increased competitive pressure from imports and then draw the effect of industry-level import competition on firm-level patenting respectively. To sum up, the innovation response of US firms more exposed to rising market competition from China has been substantially and unambiguously negative.
